Off to Fabian's Wig Oh!

The last time we had been to Fabian's to get our hair cut it was around end of July to beginning of August of 2013.  It's now around 18 months later and just over 10 inches of hair later.  Kieran has finally had enough of the long hair.

Parents were loving his long locks.  Commenting that he looked like an artist.  Most strangers thought he was my daughter.  But when we said he was growing his hair long enough to donate to make a wig for cancer patients.  The look of "oops" changed to an expression of approval and lit up their eyes with praise.

I thought this would happen just around Christmas time, because he said to me that he was tired of having the long hair.  That he was ready to have it cut.
But in measuring it, it was barely past the 8 inch mark.  The minimum required for donation.  He'd have peach fuzz for hair.  So he decided to put it off.

Then early last week he asked again and I measured it and it was past 9 inches.  So at least he would have some insulation during the coldest months of the year.  It was expected to drop to -30 deg C (overnight) this past weekend.  I just wanted to make sure his head didn't freeze into an ice cube while we were out skiing on Family Day weekend.

In the morning Tresa washed Kieran's hair well.  Making sure it was clean and conditioned and didn't smell like the Swansea CRC Pool. Then off we went to Fabian's.  I always pass by his shop on my way to the hockey shop near Bloor and Dundas.  So it's not like I haven't seen Fabian in a year and a half.

We took Yahvi and Samatva with us.  Good thing too, someone needed to do some assisting while we took a video and photographs.  Although we had to wake him up a few times, when we caught him napping in the other chair.

Yahvi wanted to witness this event so she could relay it to her class and she was also taking photos with her mom's iPhone and learning to use Whatsapp.  Samatva looked like he had just woken up and was ready to head back to bed.
With the last lock, since he'd been such a good helper, we gave Elastic Boy the honour of cutting it.
Probably a lot harder than he thought it would be.
Then it was back to the couch to nap.

And Fabian went to work on cleaning up the uneven cuts.
Usually he said guys and girls come in to do this but he makes 1 cut.  What we did was not the norm.
However if we did it that way, we wouldn't have donated as much. Unless we cut Yahvi's hair to supplement.  She has tons of it.

Many of the locks of hair cut from Kieran's head was about 10 inches long.  Wrong time of year to end up with a buzz cut, but he seemed ok with it and I think it felt like he had lost about 10% of his body weight off his head.  It seemed refreshing for him.

We always get our hair cuts together.  My hair wasn't long, there's no way I could grow my hair for 1.5 years.  I'd end up looking like a Q-tip.
I had been trimming it myself with my trimmer.  So I had Fabian clean up my hair, just so I can keep our hair cuts in sync.

We found a site local to us that takes donated hair and you can mail it in with a prepaid label print out.  We have all the locks in a zip lock bag and Kieran plans to bring it to school to show his class and teachers before drops it in the mail box.

Kieran seemed genuinely proud of doing something for a good cause. It just goes to show that it doesn't take much do a lot of good in the world.  It was nice he had his good friends share in the experience.
