EcoEnergy audit - is it worth it?

PHEW MAN, I'm tired!
It's been a hectic two weeks, since we came back from NJ.
I was planning to do a post about this, and then our Slovenian friend in Maribor who stood us up in Murska Sobota sent me an email asking what's going on - no posts.
So here's what's been going on.

Monday (2 weeks ago)
HVAC vendor #1 quote for high eff furnace and AC. Our furnace was 29 years old. And although working fine. We were playing russian roulette with this thing. It's sure to stop working on the coldest day of winter.

Tuesday
EcoEnergy audit being done. Tresa's godmother was planning to get her furnace done since it was 26 years old. I found out through her (from what the furnace installers were telling her) that mid-efficiency furnaces were no longer going to be sold in Canada as of Dec 31, 2009. Knowing that when we will need to replace our furnace we may have no choice but to install a high eff furnace (92% AFUE) and since we wouldn't have a choice, would there be a rebate? Why would there be if you have no choice?
Right now you get between $1500 - $2000 dollars in rebates (some installers are able to provide additional rebates your eco energy auditor will tell you that) if you upgrade your furnace to a high efficiency and AC unit to a 14 SEER AC unit. Basically the rebates bring the price of a high eff down below a mid eff unit.

Also since we were already doing our windows. That's $60 dollars ($30 from FED + $30 from ONT gov't, which basically matches per dollar what the FEDs give) back for every window and/or door your replace.

Originally I wasn't going to do an audit, because 1) I figured we'd get a mid-eff system, cause that's all we needed. And 2) I figured they'd tell me stuff I already knew.
After getting some prices for both mid and high eff furnaces, and since mid-eff systems were going to be banned by Dec 31, 2009 (you can check the NRCan site yourself - got confirmation about this from the gov't) we did it.
And when they came and did their blower test (creating negative pressure in the house) he showed the windows were leaky which we knew, but he also showed me leaks in the middle of the house! I couldn't believe it. Walls in the middle of the house connect to the attic. If the tops of the walls aren't properly sealed up there - you get air leaks.

Wednesday
- HVAC vendor #2 quote, which was higher than the first.
- new windows being installed starts finally!
- called the first furnace vendor (Converible Air) to move forward with the install for Monday. The new AC unit is almost 2x as tall as the original green rat trap. Slightly smaller footprint, but taller. So we opted for a nicer AC model to offset the sheer size of the unit.

Thursday
window installation continued, will need a third day

Friday - nothing (rained out)
Saturday
Went to Home Depot to get 10 bags of insulation to put in the attic and finished putting the insulation in the attic Sat evening. Getting my attic R-value up from where it is currently to R-50 gets me $600.00 in rebates from the government.

Sunday - Anne's baby shower, went to Lowe's to pick up some supplies and did a little sanding and prepping of the windows

Monday AGAIN.
Furnace & AC installers show up early to start on the furnace. Within a few hours they have the old one out and the new one in.
And they tell me that we have a rat problem. They show me two dead rodents in our AC. Electrocuted. Attracted by the warmth of the wires. All it took was a nose on one wire and tail on another. Zappo! Then his buddy was wondering where he went off to and followed suit. ZAPPO! Kentucky Fried Rat.

I notice that only 1 pipe outside is installed - that's the exhaust (top pipe). They told me I didn't need the intake pipe. Since the room is open - the furnace would take air from the surrounding room. This ends up creating negative pressure in the house. So cold air comes in where there a leaks. But if your house is tightened up. You could starve your furnace. It's better to have that second pipe. Otherwise what's the point in buying a high eff furnace.

They drilled the second hole and installed the intake.

Window installers finish up. I help them put in the two front windows. We carry the 8ft x 4-1/2 ft window up to the 2nd floor inside the house. I was skeptical about getting it through the house, but we did it. Nothing damaged too. I was very impressed by these guys.

Furnace vendor #3 calledand left a message to say he couldn't make it. WHOOPS!
Which was a good thing because these guys were almost done and I forgot to cancel this appt.

Tuesday
Furnace & AC installer finish. Everything looks good. Everything works. I checked the airflow to the 2nd floor and it's so much better than before! We'll be actually warm this winter in our house and cooler in the summer. WOO HOO!
My pocket book is also feeling a little warm from all the bills. BOO HOO!

Then after everyone was done and I figured I could relax a bit, then a city works worker comes by handing out a notice that the city is shutting off the water main for the street (no water for estimated 7 hrs) in order to replace a pipe where the fire hydrant is at house #2 on our street.

So I rush out to buy a replacement shutoff valve to replace the main shutoff that doesn't shut off in our house. And I borrow a torch and do a practice run with the neighbour. Saves me the $ that the city bills you for calling out a city worker to shut off the valve to your house.

Wednesday
I keep checking for the city guys to come and shut off the water. The city doesn't arrive to do the work, instead they will show up Thursday. They said they had an emergency somewhere else. Probably at some bar or donut shop.

I do some sanding and scraping of the sills.

Thursday comes around and I see the truck and the lights at the top of the street. They showed.
I have all my stuff ready and I called our good friend Billy to let him know that I've got 2 hrs to get the valve put in and I've started bleeding all the water from the house.. 15 mins later he shows up at our door. 5 mins later he brings in his torch. 20 mins later, he's done replacing the old valve with the new one I just bought. He's a pro man. And he's so neat and solders were perfect! I wanted to do it myself, but that's a critical piece in our plumbing. If I screwed it up. There'd be a huge mess in our basement.

30 mins later I had to jump to my meeting.
Thanks Billy. We owe you.

Just last Friday
Windows look great from the curb (the awing will get replaced in a year or so). They're aluminum clad wood frame windows that we got from Lowe's. They come primed on the inside so you can paint them whatever you want. The window installers were saying that if they had a choice they would put wood windows on their house. They had installed vinyl (or how Antonio says it - 'vee-nil' - ask him what he said to the DJ at the Guverment one time - are you spinning 'vee-nil') but they said that it's a bit flimsy, wood at least has structure.

The double-sided tape from the past 3 years of putting up plastic has damaged our sills. So I have to get the wood filler out and start prepping and priming the sills. And I have plastic sheets hanging from the ceilings to keep the dust down.

I also went to get paint supplies and brushes and start the prep work for a weekend of painting and inhaling fumes.

Saturday (2 days ago)
Tresa gets ready and loads the car to do a garage sale at our old Daycare ladies house. While I watch Kieran and feed him breakfast and bring him over later. My sister comes to the garage sale to pick up Kieran to sleep over so he's not brain damaged from the fumes. I continue to tape the windows and begin painting.

I put together the attic access door.
This is it. It's two 6 inch pieces of styrofoam. Glued together, to a 3/4 inch plywood and another thin piece of wood that was the original access door.

In this pic you can see that thin piece of wood.
This was part of the recommendations on what I could do to tighten the house.
Because there was cold air on the other side and warm air on the inside, condensation was forming in the winter and creating mold. I painted the door with Zinser mold paint and then oil based paint.
Also the attic hatch frame was really poorly constructed, it had gaps everywhere. I had to caulk it and seal it from the inside of the attic and I'll do it from the inside of the closet too. Just to be sure. It's no wonder dust was coming through and dirtying Tresa's clothes.

We have dinner (Queen Thai) and take home some coffee and timbits for a few more hours of painting before going to bed at 3am.

Sunday - finished painting the last 4 windows. Thank GOD!
Monday (today) - touch up and remove the tape.

Tresa says it's like we're moving into a new house. The windows are really nice. You can feel the air flowing through the house when they're open and it's tight when they're closed.
After years of toughing it out through the winters. We've got a new furnace which should save us some money (rising fuel costs) and there was another 100.00 rebate from the gas company if you install a new furnace. Plus 15.00 for a new programable thermostat.

I am DONNO!

Well I thought I was done.
Then Tresa thought of some other things to do while the house was upside down.
Oh well. The windows are in. I waited 2 years for windows. We did lots of homework, but it was worth it. Furnace and AC are done. Attic is done. There's a whole list of stuff that can get you back quite a bit of money. The attic insulation only cost me 300.00. I get back 600.00. It was worth the 2 days of having itchy arms.

Go to the NRCan site to find out more. But you need to get an audit done. After our experience, I would recommend it if you are planning to do renos.

A new day dawning

It was the first day of school.
Day numero uno of Montessori. I should be saying it in francais.

le jour un de montessori.

Everything was cool until we turned into the parking lot of Kieran's new school.
There was no convincing him that this was a good thing.
I just agreed that it was okay to be scared and said I was scared too when my mamma dropped shipped me at school.

They bring in two new kids per day at school. Which is smart. It would be the end of the world if all the new kids were dumped at the same time. There wouldn't be enough kleenex in the world to wipe the tears or the runny noses.

In any case I was feeling a lump in my throat too. I knew it would be a tough morning for him. It was a new surrounding, new people, new language. No more Ukranian music. Now it was french for 8 hrs. More rules, more structure, more learning.
It was a good thing for him. He needed to start school. And I needed to go to work.
I could just picture him looking at the teachers speaking french to him. I should teach him how to say - 'je ne comprends pas'.

So like I said, there's lots of rules. Which is good. Structure is good.
Parents are not allowed in the classroom or cloakroom, I broke this rule. What can I do with a crying kid attached to me like a cat in a boat in the middle of the lake.
I'm surprised he let me take of his shoes and put on his indoor ones and take off his jacket, in the cloakroom. All the assistants were telling me this rule - en francais. To which I nodded - I know I broke the rule.

It was like I was sending him off to the fields to work and make bread or something. The attendant in his Casa was there and she took him and his epi-pen and list of allergies, which I was thinking of attaching to the back of his shirt. I gave him a kiss and let him know that mamma was going to pick him up later, and left. I wanted to take a video or photo to document the day. But decided against it or all the attendants would be chastising me en francais forever.

As I was leaving I saw his teacher. She asked how did it go.
I said - good. He's bawling his eyes out.
He'll be okay in 5 mins, maybe 30 mins, tops.

Tomorrow is jour deux. I'm wondering if he'll put 2 and 2 together and realize where we are going.

Your post brought memories of my first day in school. First time away from the coziness and safety you feel at home, i had cried a lot. I thought they will jail there and never let me back home.

My First Roller Coaster ride

I shot this video on the Tornado ride at Jenkinson's Boardwalk park. There's no dips or loops. And it's small but it goes around 3 times. And by the way I was feeling that day. It was enough of a ride for me. And a fast enough and big enough and fun enough ride for Kieran.

Liam was in the seat in front of us, if you listen carefully you can hear the high pitched scream like a dog whistle.

Woodbury Commoners

We went to Woodbury Common and I was really feeling the heat and sun beating down on me. I was still suffering from a mild form of heat exhaustion from the race I did on Monday. We've been going out every day to the beach and to the boardwalk and it's been getting warmer every day. So I've been feeling dizzy and nauseated every day. And I feel it more when we're in the car and in the hot sun.

WC was designed like a mouse maze. They've done their research and they've discovered that shoppers are like mice, and high end designer merchandise on sale is like really nice blue cheese.

This is the TK path. Can you follow her through the maze? Can you help Ray and Kieran get home safely?

It was so hot I stayed in the Food Court in the middle. Wished I'd brought my walkie-talkies to find out where in the maze she was. You could almost do an adventure/scavenger hunt here.

But Kieran was fine. There's a play park at WC, so he wasn't bored. So I stayed in the shade while he puttered around. There's a climbing wall on the side there of this jungle gym. See that girl there. She's stuck and calling for her dad.

The guys selling Hagen Das ice cream are pretty agressive. Well one east indian vendor was, Kieran saw the sign and it was hot so I said ok. But I was looking for a popsicle for like 75 cents. Not a $5 rip off dessert. Most of the stuff He couldn't have, but the one thing he could the guy didn't hand it to me. Cuz I was saying no thanks. He handed it to Kieran. I was hot and fatigued and couldn't put up the usual fight. So I caved. I asked Kieran if he had money. His response - "I have no money, you have money."
But I took a bite. Kid has to learn to share you know, besides I paid for the darn thing.

But this is my most memorable moment there. I think this was a hallowe'en costume. But usually there are these udders attached to them.

Shrimp King

We've driven by this place every time we visit my cousin in NJ. I love seafood. And it looks like a hole in the wall. Or in this case a hole in the ground. But sometimes these types of places are a diamond in the rough. If it's been around for a long time and it looks like this, there might be a tasty reason it's still in business.

Anyways, I finally went in to get some takeout fish and chips and some shrimps (it is Shrimp King you know).

The fish was sole. The fries were ok. I noticed the shrimp was frozen and in a bag that was probably bought at Costco. The fish was in a breaded batter or something. It was tough and overall...not that good.

So now I know that there's a good reason the place looks the way it does. It's a reflection of the food.
We still drive by Shrimp King, but now when I see it instead of stopping, we're going to keep driving by.

Jenkinson's Boardwalk at Point Pleasant

It was a warm and sunny day for a mini amusement park outing.Time to take the kiddies out so they can quit fighting of this car or that train and get them tired and go to bed early. Ya that last wish...not a chance.
This is Jenkinson's boardwalk down at Point Pleasant, NJ. It's a really great place for the kids to go to ride rides and play games and eat junk.

It's not too large. But for little people this is like the CNE. It's right by the beach, if you want to play in the water. There's a boardwalk. It's a really great place for kids. On their site it says "the magic of summer".
Ya...watch your hard earned dollars disappear before your eyes.

Kieran was old enough and more importantly he was just tall enough to ride on the rides. 36 inches is the minimum height on a lot of these rides. So as long as he's about the size of a dwarf and taller than a midget he was good to go. He even got to ride on his very first roller coaster. We rode on it 3 times.

There's lots of junk food around. It's no wonder that the US is quickly becoming the world's largest nation.
Pizza was alright, actually pretty good. I just didn't have time to eat it all cause Kieran wanted to go on the train again.

I had this bacon, cheese, sausage and broccoli. Crust was really good. And it was a massive slice. But of course you pay for it. It was $13.25 for that and a gatorade and a bottle of water.
They had the usual fare, funnel cakes (deep fried dough with powdered sugar). They had italian ice and soft-serve ice cream and shakes.

French fries, cotton candy, and massive pretzels. And you can wash it down with lots of sugar infused soda pop. Then there was something called Zeppoles or something. Whatever it was it was deep fried in summer old oil. Just like everything else.

You know those carnie games where you use a mechanical grabber to pick up a toy animal filled with combustible stuffing . Well they had them here too! But instead you can win iTouch's, COACH bags, GPS, iPods, Apple computers, laptops, gameboys, Wii's, XBOX's and flame propellant stuffed animals. They were 2 bucks a try. But it was not as easy as it looked.

It looked so easy but it's like winning a lottery. I gave it a shot.
And then decided to save my money for the bubble hockey, soft-serve petroleum concocted ice cream and watched others try to pick up the COACH handbags and iTouch's and may be learn from there attempts.

There was a father there with there kids and I was really rooting for them and a couple of times I thought I was going to witness someone winning.

But...it didn't happen. The prize always fell out. Giving you the sense that you could do it if you put in another 2 dollars, and another, and another. Pretty soon you could have actually bought that COACH bag or iTouch or new car, house. It really gets you excited. But again...nothing good comes easy.

All in all I had a bit of headache from the sun or the spinning rides or the roller coaster, or the diesel fumes from the train, but the kids had fun. That's what counts.

Can you see the look on my face. I thought tito Chris was going to spin me round like a record spewing my pizza all over the place.

The Return of the King of The Donut Derby

This was the Donut Derby. My first ever bike race. It was a pretty fun bike race down in Pennsylvania that I rode with my American Cousin. I didn't know what to expect. Was it a serious bike race, with super serious cyclists? Instead I was in for a treat. There were all sorts of cyclists there, from kids to seniors, riding tri bikes to road bikes, to mountain bikes to tandems.

The kicker in this race was - for every donut you eat you get 3 minutes deducted off your time. For a donut adjusted time. So strategy was - eat a lot of donuts and you could have a really good race time.

The race itself is broken up into 3 legs. A 13 mile outbound stage from Lehigh Valley Velodrome to William Delong Park where you must get an organizer to mark your bib number and then proceed to the donut station. The middle leg was an 11 mile loop in the surrounding country side back to the park for a second donut stop. Then it was another 13 miles back to the velodrome. By the end I was just trying to make sure I could see someone in front of me to follow so I wouldn't get lost.
Only thing that was missing was Tim Horton's coffee at the park.

I ate a total of 7 donuts (21 mins in time deductions off my 2:10.35 time) for a donut adjusted time of 1:49.35 or around there. Chris ate 5, but they ran out of donuts when he got to the donut station after the second leg. Chris could have eaten 15, cause he can turn the pig mode on with the flip of a switch.

I did this race because I wanted to witness that guy in the middle of the Team Skelly pic below with the Spare Tire belt, eat as many glazed Krispy Kreme donuts as he could.

At the first donut stop I just missed Joe finish eating 8 donuts. He was leaving for the second leg while I was just arriving. I was hungry. I only had 2 oatmeal bars for breakfast. I ate while Danielle, Joe's wife interviewed me with a mouth full of pure fat and sugar. I needed coffee. She told me Joe had a plan. He was going for 24 donuts. He was planning to get his donut adjusted time down to under 1 hr.

I ate 3 at the first then did the big square loop back to the park for more refreshments (ie. donuts) and ate another 4 more. And made it in time to watch Joe consume another heart attack stack of 20 donuts. For a grand total of 5800 calories. The sugar from the donuts was going to send him into turbo mode and turn on the jets on the return leg back to the velodrome or to the toilet spewing jets. The only reason he did 28 was because the previous record was 27.

I was thinking of eating another donut or two, but I decided to leave after the 4th so that I could be out on the course for Joe and John to catch up and I could help pace them get back to the finish.
It seemed a longer ride back to the velodrome than the outbound journey. Probably because the ride back seemed to have more hills. And the wind had picked up and was against us.

Some felt the agony of it more than others. This poor dude fell as the marshall was removing the tag from his bib. Those are his buddies looking at him and laughing.

Joe and John finished in 2hrs 20mins. Joe's final donut adjusted time was 56 mins (84 mins of donut time deductions).

Chris made it BACK! And in one piece.
I thought he got a flat or something.
In a donut adjusted time of 2:38.0 (or non adjusted 2hr 53 mins).

It was a perfect day for a ride, it was cool at the start but the temperatures rose steadily. By the return leg I could really feel the warm rays of the sun.

And it was more and more difficult to figure out if I was on the right road since the number of riders around me was pretty sparse.

The awards at the end of the race could be more organized, but in the end it was Team Skelly that came out on top. He won it last year too, but the organizers made an error counting his donuts.

No one even came close to the number of donuts he'd gulfed down this year. He made sure that he was going to win the spare tire belt for the most donuts and the best overall donut adjusted time.

It was the return of the king.

Click here for more photos of the Donut King and his family and the race.

Time from my watch:
1st leg: 39.3.98
donut stop: 4.46.50 (elapsed time: 44:20.48)
