m&m's and chocolate

Kieran was trying out his new costume. You know at crime scenes when the have the outline of bodies. Well this is it. This was my costume that I was trying out for size. Doesn't it look like I'm right out of the Shawshank Redemption. Now all I need is the ball and chain. So after about an hour of straight chiselling and my hand going numb and getting only 1/4 of it broken off. My neighbour Joe brought over that sledge hammer. He said it would go faster. So I laid into the base and started wailing away. Pieces of concrete were flying everywhere. But the going was slow, it wasn't much faster than the hammer and chisel. I thought I'd be doing this for at least the rest of the week. Then one lucky smack and the thing cracked right down the rest of the base. WOO HOO! Sayonara flagpole. This was what was left of it. The sun was setting and I didn't want to be pounding in the middle of the dark.
In the end this was our flagpole. May it R.I.P.
I can't really take too much credit for this. I had expended so much energy beating the crap out of the concrete base of that flagpole that I was willing to take a short cut carving this pumpkin. It's really easy. You buy these carving kits from Shoppers Drug Mart or Loblaws. It comes with this little saw like cutter, pin and scraper tools and several cool stencils.
This our neighbour Joe. He's into Goth. He was playing this CD full of scary sounds trying to spook the kids. But in return he gives the kids lots of candy.
After a few houses of trick or treating, Kieran was tired. I walked him up and down the street so he could watch the other kids. And before you knew it. Lights out.
But after a little power nap, he was going after the leftovers.
NOW this is what Halloween's all about - candy and chocolate.
This kid's a fast learner.

Here's the results from this year's annual carve. I did the Gang of Ghosts.
This is the 10th annual carve for us.

Our favorite pumpkin. We created this one 18 months ago and he just keeps
growing.
This float was right in our backyard. The creator was there too. He builds
stuff like this for parades all over the world like the Macy's Day Parade in
NYC, Carnivale in Trinidad and Tobago. He's also particpated in Caribana in
Toronto. This float actually won him first prize in Trinidad. This is only
a hobby for him. He stores all his floats in a warehouse in New York City.
He also sponsored a Halloween Costume Contest this year in the parking lot
behind our house and gave out a ton of candy and treats for the kiddies. A
great gesture from his heart.

Teen takes Liam on his first trick or treating run. He's gritting his teeth
cause he ate so much sugar he's in diabetic shock.

Cheap beggars can't be choosers

BZZZZY, BZZZY, busy as a bee today!
It's my first Halloween.Carman, here's that bee outfit that you gave us. Finally came in handy. By the way. He's just turned 6 months and this outfit was 3-6months. So the pants were a little short. At least he was able to breathe in it.
And no my nose didn't explode, I thought I'd bought some black makeup from the dollar store, it looked black and the store employee was the one that pointed it out to me and said "hey we have some black lipstick that you could use". When Tresa put some on her hand to try it out, it looked red. I said it can't be. I read the label on it, it said "mood magic". So I put it on. And it looked much darker originally. Pretty much like a dark purple. But then it got brighter.

But the day started out much different. It was the eve of Daylight Savings. And I did some errands before Tresa and Kieran returned from Oshawa.
This is Ola our neighbour, guess what her name is short for. And it's not Olga.
It's Olympia.
Believe me she could be in the olympics for wrestling, weightlifting or shot put, in the men's division. She strong, man.
This leaning white mast was our flagpole. We didn't pay extra for that thing, it came with the house.
Anyways it was a beautiful weekend. And there won't be too many like these left this year. So while Tresa put up the hallowe'en decorations, I puttered around the house - swept the front, tidied up the back yard, gathered up all the leaves and trimmed vines. I was pulling up some of the morning glory vines and accidentally grabbed a rose bush by accident. It hurt and I was bleeding. That rose bush is now living on borrowed time.
Instead of hacking the thing to pieces I worked on one of the long standing items on our TODO list.
Tresa couldn't stand this flagpole in our front yard from the day we first saw the house. We bought it with the intention of digging it out. The old owners even put a new flag on it for us. Which we left on until it was shredded and one of our neighbours said - "Ray, you should probably replace that flag." Isn't it illegal to have a shredded Canadian flag up?
Three years later, it was still an eyesore for her. But NO MORE. It was coming down.
Knowing that we're going to re-sod our front next spring. I thought. Might as well do it now. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to dig too deep. See that shovel. That's how deep I had to go. The daughter of the previous owner's of our house, said to us when we were buying the house - "Good luck in removing that flagpole, it's probably 10 ft deep."
Not quite. It was either the flagpole or me.
I beat the flagpole.
Look to the light. The light is good. It's like a miracle, we got that thing out. I couldn't believe how friggin deep it was. They don't use that much cement for the light posts.
See the height of that shovel. That's basically how deep I had to dig.
That's 2 solid buckets of concrete. It weighed a ton. It took me Joe - from across the street, and Ola our polish neighbour and myself to pull this thing out. Ola may be a senior citizen, but she leveled a 40' tree by herself. She's like a bull.

So with the flagpole out and cut to pieces, basically half the work was done, but we had to head out to a part-tay. So the rest of the flag pole work had to wait til the next day.
This is Alli. We were heading to her and Jordan's place. Thank god she had food. I was starving. I had been going non-stop all day. I was so hungry I could eat my left hand.
Or fingers? lady fingers? Actually they were really yummy. I must have eaten at least a hand.

Elvis lives man. And he can run 10K.
This is Eric and Alicia. The friends we had a garage sale with.
That bee belongs to us.

More photos of Hallowe'en...

We got to their place around midnight, but Kieran was super tired. He was ready to sting someone if he wasn't in a nice warm bed.
Kieran was pooped. He was so tired. He had been dealing with a cold all week. So he was toughing it at the parties. And he was a good boy.
Lesson for today boys and girls: whatever you do, never buy make up from a store that sells "Everything for a dollar". Remember my Rudolf red nose. Well the stuff wasn't coming off with regular soap.
I use this stuff to clean my hands when I'm working on the car. I think I got almost all of it off, but it was still slightly red. Not sure if it was because I the grit in this stuff took off 10 layers of skin, because it was stinging. I had to put super cold water on my face to soothe the burn.

Inspired by Jordan and Alli's place, in that some IKEA furniture can really work and look good! The next day, I managed to say good-bye to an old pain in my behind. Our old futon. We're expecting our new sofa to arrive this week so. We needed to make room. And I didn't want this thing in the basement, I figured we can find something from IKEA that'll work. So if you want to come All, call us and Tresa and Kieran and I can make an afternoon of it.
I put an ad in Craigslist that it was for free to whoever picked it up. Within minutes of putting up the ad, I got an email, then another and another. I couldn't believe it. Tresa said that I should've sold it for 25 bucks. But this thing was old, it was falling apart. It was missing nuts on bolts. And I didn't care. I just wanted it gone. Plus, because it's free, people are like vultures. Put a dollar figure beside it and people avoid you like you've got the Avian Flu.
There was one lady who was second in emailing me, who was begging me to save it for her. Then when the first guy said he couldn't stuff it into his honda civic, I emailed the lady back to say she could have it if she can pick it up today. She then asked if we had pets or smoked and it the futon was in good condition. I was about to reply. Then I thought. This thing is free. What the HECK? If she wanted something good. Buy something NEW. Damn CHEAP-O. Beggars can't be choosers man. So I called the next dude on the list and they picked it up at 10pm that night. I was hoping it'd be gone before night fall. I checked out Craigslist in SanFran and in the FREE section, someone was getting rid of a futon, old stereo and he just gave his address and said, it's on the curb. First come first served.

Returns on Investment

I just got my camera back on Saturday. After 5 months in the shop I got my Canon A510 back from getting repaired for a second time. But this time I came out of the store with a brand new canon A610 instead.I got the A510 strictly for when Tresa and I go travelling. I didn't want to lug around the G5.
Here's the story. I got the A510 April 8, 2005. It was working fine until I took it with me to Europe to Antonio's wedding. On the wedding day I got an E18 error code. I was pissed! On the day that I really needed it, it sent me an E18 error code. Now I know what that code means - you're S.O.L. buddy. So I returned the camera to get it repaired. But I did manage to borrow Larry's camera and used my SD card to take pics. So that was a quick thinking workaround that I thought of. So I wasn't totally out of luck.

I took it in to get repaired the day after I landed. That was June 8, 2005. I then called week after week and go the same answer week after week - "it should be another week." I did not get my camera back initially until the beginning of Sept just before we visited Trish. And it was fine until I played the movies back and there was no sound. It then started to take a really long time in between shots. Around 10 seconds of delay. Apparently a buffer problem. So back into the shop it went. I then went into the calling week after week mode again and I finally got it back after a month and a half.

But in that time I was able to speak to the owner of the camera shop that I bought it at and with his suggestion I got an opportunity to talk to the Canon sales rep. I spoke to him on Tuesday and told him I the story with the A510 and said that I think I got a lemon. He then said he would call the store owner about it. So when I didn't hear from him later that day and the next day I thought I was just getting the brush off. But when I heard from him on Friday I was caught off guard. I thought I'd be getting the E18 error code from him too. But he told me I'd be getting a brand new A510. That's all I wanted to hear. But having the chance to use the camera I realized that I wanted something better. I was happy with the pictures with the A510 and it's 3.2 MP images. But I just didn't want to see that camera anymore since I'd had so many problems. So I upgraded the camera to the new A610. So I was a happy camper. :-D
The ironic thing was that I just shipped back a faulty Firewire card and because they were shipping me a new one, the shipping was free so I was able to buy another item and get the shipping for free. So this was a good week for returning purchases.

I've only had the camera for a day but I'm already really pleased with it. Steve the store owner highly recommended this one and so did the Canon sales rep Jim. But I'd already made the decision before they made their remarks, just look at this sample shot I took in poor lighting.
It's a 5.0 MP camera (but more megapixels doesn't always translate into better pics, so remember that Hong) and the processor is the DIGIC II and it's way faster than the A510 and it had the flip out display which I found really handy on my G5. It really captures the moment doesn't it? The colour of the lollipop on their faces, around the lips. It even captured the crazed look as the sugar hit the bloodstream.
The only drawback I find is that it's not as portable any more. But there's pros and cons with everything. If I'd gotten one of the smaller SD series, I wouldn't have the flip out screen.
What do you mean I have to order take out?

So what's the moral of the story? It does pay to complain, but it pays to complain in a nice way. If you complain in a not so nice manner, they can choose to ignore you. The beauty of call display. And it's good to shop at the little privately owned shops versus the big box stores. But talk to the owner, he'll go out of his way for you. The grunt behind the counter can't do squat. At the big box stores I'd have to buy their extra insurance (you know the ones they sell you for your own piece of mind) in order to get a brand new camera, but forget about getting an upgrade.

Rain Rain Go away, come again another day

Well, it's happy 6 months today for Kieran. We were going to go for a hay ride and apple picking at Chudleigh's to get the usual 6-7 bags of apples for basically 1.5 people to eat. Tresa loves to pick apples. But then it's up to me to mow them down. We usually give a bag or two to our neighbours and it somehow comes back in the form of a pie. But last year we ate em ALL! But unfortunately the sky started to pour. So instead we're at home. But it's just as well, Kieran's got a cold that he probably got from papa. I've been sneezing for at least a week now. But I've been washing my hands before I pick him up to avoid passing the cold to him as much as possible. But I guess it was one little airborne particle that got to him. BTW Anne/Antonio, I use the hankerchiefs. And so now he's a little congested and when he sneezes, he's just like one of those runny nosed Filipino kids, that I've seen pictures of (ie. Antonio). He was up quite often last night because he was stuffed up.

Lately he's been able to sit up on his own for more than 2 seconds, before doing a face plant. Now he's up to at least a few minutes, before leaning over to the point of now return. His motor skills are pretty good. He does this funny US Marine crawl on his belly. He's not really moving all that fast, but if something he wants is about a foot or two in front of him he'll roll from side to side inching his way towards it. Sort of like an over weight boa that's eaten a cow. And he can lean forward and sit back up all on his own. Lean over the wrong way though and it's tim-brrrrr.

How much is dat?

This is a year of many firsts for Kieran and us. First road trip, first airplane ride, and now his first garage sale.
Actually it's my first garage sale too.
This is the street where we used to live. Well I lived here for over 4 years. The original house looked a lot like the house to the right of it, but then it burnt down and the owner built this house with three separate apartments. I was in the dungeon.
Hey there's people here to buy our junk. I can't believe my eyes.

This is Alicia, her and Eric were our old upstairs neighbours, when we use to live here. We hooked up with her to have a garage sale. We set up at her place (our old rental place) because there's better traffic there. If we did it at ours, we'd have nobody come around.
Hey STOP thief! He hasn't paid for our JUNK!
Just kidding. He bought Tresa's old THICK socks. It was just what he was looking for!
It's the Great Wall, at Humberside and Indian Grove.
I don't think this lady bought anything, but she had this really cool sling type baby carrier. It was great having Kieran there because he seemed to attract a lot of people and we said we'd let him drool on them for free if they bought something. So if you're going to have a garage sale, borrow someone's kid or dog. But only if they're cute and friendly. If they're a wailing kid, forget it.
This was Tresa's brainchild. Something she organized and planned and spearheaded. I think she was just happy we were able to find her favourite hat for Kieran (the Roots one with the two pointy things on it) that she accidentally dropped somewhere in the Winners she was shopping in last night. We went back there to look for it and found it after re-tracing her steps.

The traffic was great in the morning. But man, did a lot cheap-o's come out. One thing I learned from these garage sales, forget about getting your price. These people will haggle over 50 cents for a mug. Geezus. Then the guy didn't even have the 50 cents to get the mug for his kid. He only had 45 cents.

You can't see the windows of my old apartment, because it's right at the bottom. If you're over 5'-9" it'd be tough to live there. Mel used to clunk his head against a beam that ran right across the front door to the apartment. And sometimes I would hit the ceiling with my hand when I put on my shirt. But other than that it was cozy and warm, and clean. At least it was.
This is Harley, I tried to sell him, but he got refunded.
Kieran spent a lot of time outdoors and it put a rosy shade on his cheeks. Plus it tired him out. Must have been all the cool fresh air. Right after this he fell asleep.

Hey is that what I think it is? Yep, it's FOOD! Lunch time!Za and diet coke with Lime.
I did a pizza run, 2 large 3 topping pizzas, 1 veggie and the other pepperoni, pineapples and green peppers. YUMMY!

As I was eating a slice, I caught this action shot.
This is a bengali cat below. You know when a cat sees a car barrelling down the road right at it. I bet it looks a lot like this.
The lady said that it's actually a house cat. So it may always be a little nervous looking. Like it just drank a jug of Red Bull.
No it wasn't hurricane Rita. It was our garage sale towards the end of our day.
So at the end of it all, this was what was left. An old beat up chair.

YEA! We sold more than half our JUNK! We came with 6 boxes jammed with crap. We came home with 3 boxes and a big bottle of shampoo.

Now we can get more stuff for ME!

Happy Sukaboy day Dedek

Happy Birthday to Dedek. This is Kieran's grandfather. This is what happens when you get older and retire, you get the same body type as when you're a baby. All Dedek needs is a bib.Look at that profile. Kieran could have inherited that schnoz.
Holy jumpin, Batman, it's the Joker bearing gifts.
