Boo - hey it's warm out

Man the warm weather came just in time for the kiddies. It was a beautiful evening to go trick or treating.

I was anticipating sub-zero temperatures from what the weather had been for the past 2 weeks. We got snow last week and the ladies next door had their snow shovel out. But today it was a gift from mother nature to the kiddies.

Yahvi and Kieran couldn't wait for me to get ready to go out. It was like they'd already eaten something sugary.
Finally I was ready to trick or treat with them.
So we hit the trail following the doggie tail to candy land.

We went to the usual houses. Atul & Sonal's, Sam & Jessie's, Cathy's, Mina's down at the top of the street. Where we got most of our stash. And this house at the corner that's meant for halloween cause their front yard is like this all year round (ie. a disaster).

After doing a few streets Kieran and Yahvi's bags were overflowing. Kieran kept dropping candy along the way but he was careful to pick them up. Good thing he's so low to the ground.
So we headed home, cause Kieran said he was hungry. He napped before we went out, so I figured he was hungry. But he was hungry for his treats.
With Kieran's allergies, Tresa and I did the parently thing and ate all the candies with nuts. It was tough but we did it.

And this is what happens when he has a few treats. He strikes a pose.
Maybe I should give him a few treats before his auditions. Might land him a few more gigs.

Then we headed back over to Sam & Jessie's to work off some of that sugar. Plus I wanted to see what their dog had as a costume.
Unfortunately, he didn't like wearing it and so he didn't have it on, but we hung out there anyways.

My First Class photo

One for the record books.

Say cheese! Or maybe not.
Does anyone want any copies of this individual photo of our happy and cheerful looking boy? We have to put in our orders. Or maybe I can just send these out as christmas cards.
Doesn't it just say 'Merry Christmas! Bah Humbug'

If I take it to Glamour Shots do you think they could put a smile on him?

Zoo Run - 2nd Place

Another year and another zoo run and cub run.

Last week was awesome weather to do a run. It was going to be 22 deg C and clear skies. Too bad that wasn't the day of the run.

On this day it was going to be a high of 9 deg C. Aw man it's always chilly when I run... But we were all registered for a run and a day at the zoo, so we were committed.

My hamstring was sore, but I figured I'd do what my legs could give me today.
It was as always, a mad rush to get to the race site. I had 1hr and forgot my wallet on the stairs. It only set us back about 5mins, but I knew every minute counted. We got there with 10 mins for me to pick up my timing chip, bag checked and head to my corral for the race start. I had 5 mins to spare till the start of the race. And I even had time to do a bio break and warm up. Gotta love it. I don't need a warm up...my heart is already racing from the stress of getting to the start line.

I did pretty good considering all things. 46:48.6 by my watch. 4:41 per km. This course has some rolling hills and tight turns and steps to climb too. So I was happy. Although I'm hurting today.

It was the Oasis Zoo run (click link or the photo of the kiddies) and this year's Cub run had a little twist. There's a dalmation, a frog, a clown fish and a tiger. It's almost like the wizard of Oz. Kieran was rearing to go. He couldn't wait for me to finish my race so that he could run his Cub Race. And this year he ran the whole thing. No carry, carry.

For some strange reason, all of Kieran's hats and head wear always shifts to the right. That tiger head was always looking to the right. His owl outfit did the same. His head must be shaped funny.

They had a prize for the best costumes for the kiddie's. The audience applauded for each of the kids. It was very close. The frog came in first (since it was the year of the frog at the zoo) and Kieran in his tiger costume came in second. Pretty good for his first race. I've never won anything in all my years of racing. But I was injured. Plus I'm old and slow. Maybe that's why. But what I don't get in prizes I more than make up in the food at the end of the race. I usually have enough bagels, bananas, cereal, you name it to last about 2 weeks. I learned this from Dave Lee.

Kieran got a loot bag and some free zoo passes and some free movie passes and a hand shake from the COO of Oasis juice. Did he smile though? No.

WOO HOO! I can finally watch a movie in front of a big screen in digital audio instead of watching it from my 19" monitor from a guy who's holding up his camcorder in some russian movie theatre.

I was pooped too, but they don't make a stroller my size.

hmm...I recall that there was a few hills around the 4k and 8k marks that chewed into my time. Then in the last km I think I started to run out of gas. This course has some sharp turns and I did what I could in the last km, but I just didn't have that kick. But it's pretty consistent with my 5miler nightcrawler run in June.

That 70's Club

It was a meeting of the greatest minds on the planet to discuss green house gases, financial meltdown and the US presidential election (since it's way more interesting than the Canadian one).

Oh wait...naw...It was just Dedek's 70th birthday with the family and friends.
It would probably be our last time up to the cottage before the months of sub zero temperatures brings the next ice age.

So what did we do on his birthday? We moved cords of firewood and kindling from the firewood shack to under the deck. Happy Birthday.

It was a great weekend to be up there. After all those weekends in the summer that were rained out, we got 3 beautiful sunny and warm days to formally end the summer cottage season.

The fall colours were in full bloom and painted the entire landscape in yellow and red.
The night was clear and smog free.

Welcome to the 70's club.

Hammer Time!

I don't know why but everything in our house was eggshell coloured. EVERYTHING! Must have been those rose coloured glasses from the 60's and 70's.

So we repainted our kitchen, and I cleaned our range hood. Still it's that 70's off white colour. With grease it was closer to dirty yellow.

So I asked Tresa if she would like to try repainting it. So she went to Home Depot to see what colour she wanted to try. We're planning on someday redoing our kitchen - that's ONE of our dreams (well her dream, my dream is winning the lottery and/or making it big in the latest stock market crash and buying a hybrid porsche, maybe a new bike, retiring and training for an ironman or playing professional golf...ya, that's the ticket!).

So I woke up from my dream and took down ol' yeller and started taking it apart to clean.
Hey that rhymes.
I cleaned it as best I could. It was greasy and it took several stages to get 99% of the layers of grease from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's off. The 70's grease was the worst. It had swirls in it like paisleys and smelled like weed, maybe that smell was coming a few doors down.

The outside was easy to clean. The former owners were great cleaners. But internally - it was thick. Like sticky urethane. I had to use TSP, a wire brush and windex to get it squeaky clean.
And I had to let it soak for a while. The grease creeps everywhere. It's like rustproofing.

But this is what it looks like now. Pretty easy. Just need to make sure it's not windy and it's clean, no dust flying around. It's called hammered paint.

And if it didn't turn out, that range hood was gonna get hammered and replaced by another one. Seemed like a lot of work, but it only cost us 12 bucks for 2 cans of paint and the aggravation of going to Home Depot and trying to get help from the staff. But I'm pretty pleased with the results.

This was I think the last major thing on my task list. I think I'm DONNO!

Not done yet

Yep I was right. Since the house was upside down, there were tons of other things that Tresa thought of for us to do.

As I was finishing off the window sills and trim. She started to repaint the hallway.
I liked our 'fresh cut grass' green hallway.

So our house is still in a reno state for the past 4 weeks. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

As part of the EcoEnergy audit they recommended that I put either expanding foam or backer rod behind the baseboards of all the exterior walls. So I took out all the quarter round and filled it in with foam. During the week I remembered that the upstairs interior walls also had air leaks via the attic. So I filled those up with insulation and put the molding back. And then Tresa repainted the molding.

The basement laundry room has been repainted and we took down that old medicine cabinet above the toilet to Craigslist it. It was a little tricky to paint around all the pipes and the sink and basin. I had to pull out the dryer in order to paint behind that and the washer. We even removed the security bars on the windows to repaint. All the holes have been foamed in and patched. But it's done and looks great.
The aluminum blinds replaced by $30.00 per yard frosting. Good thing we only needed 1 yard to do all 4 windows. But it looks nice and bright again.

The kitchen has never been repainted since we moved in. I preped the walls and ceiling with TSP before painting. I even cleaned the fume hood. It was a little greasy and took me a few hours to clean outside-in, I ended up having to take it down to do so. I also repainted it which was a bit or work, but worth the effort in the end. I'll put a photo up tomorrow after I get it back together and mounted again.

After painting the walls and trim we looked up and the ceiling needed a do over. Ugh...more work. But how can you have clean new walls and have the ceiling still the same? You can't.

So while Tresa did that, I worked on our hall closet door that has had a problem closing ever since we repainted the trim. This is going back years and it seemed to get worse in the last year. We could never get it to close. So I borrowed a hand planer and file and finally got it fixed.

And lastly we repainted the upstairs bathroom. This was a small room so it only took us a few hours to do. We basically got the kitchen and bathroom done in a day.
There's now only 1 room that hasn't been repainted and that's the basement/laundry staging area/Kieran's second play area/my office.

We took a half a day off on the weekend to go apple picking at Chudleigh's. At least Kieran can go and play instead of being cooped up at home and inhaling paint fumes. On the upside he has had lots of treats for being a good kid and staying out of the painted areas.

This is Apple Tree Farm

It was one small step for little people.

And one giant dive for Kieran almost not making it across the gap.

Anyways we got home and it was back to work in progress.
The hallway is still not done, but that's okay. It's not a critical living area.

It's just a minor thing here and there to do, but nothing you'd notice. Except for the hallway which is just primer. But that's no biggie.

Man am I tired. We're so close to being done I can smell the the lime in my Corona.
I am really looking forward to the long weekend to kick back and drink some beer I got on sale. And do something else other than paint, go to Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Rona or Lowe's and scrub my hands with hand cleaner and try to get the paint out of my hair.

Hey it's not the cheap stuff like OV that Dick usually buys. Stella Artois was on sale this week.
